Con Leahy: A Review of our Research

At the beginning of the year i was assigned to group "Anacotty", a group formed by my Introduction to Media professor, involving myself and three other students taking part in the same course. The intention behind these groups was not only to allow us to experience the adversity of working alongside one another and producing a professional report on a famous character local to Limerick, but i also believe it was intended to allow us to interact with students in a new manner, due to restrictions making it extremely difficult to meet new people, especially in our first year of University!

Our project was based around Con Leahy, a Limerick Olympian who obtained a gold medal in the high jump during the Olympics of 1906. My focus and contribution surrounded Leahy's later years and death. I wrote mainly about his life following the Olympics, which was a tough struggle. Due to the fact that this adversary had occurred over one hundred years ago, information was extremely difficult to obtain. It seemed as if most reports of his story only copied one another, leaving it very difficult to find new information. My section of the report seemed especially difficult due to the fact that little was ever broadcast about Leahy following his success at the Olympics, however i believe my group worked hard to discover any information possible.

Although it appeared difficult to obtain a huge amount of information, the results we did achieve were extremely fascinating. I obtained a new array of knowledge surrounding such an iconic local figure. I also achieved new enlightenment on the focus of researching an occurrence and using the information with purpose. My ideas of Wiki production have broadened hugely, especially with the knowledge that most info uploaded to these sites are done completely free of charge!
